Game Informer Top 200 video games of all time

Game informer just released its top 200 video games of all time to go along with their 200th issue. I am just breaking it down and using the top 30.

1. The Legend Of Zelda-NES 1987

I am not sure I agree with it taking the 1 spot but this was a great game that lead the way for many of my adventures with link and I am glad that they started the series. Nintendo set the bar for future games with the amount of depth and detail put into completing a quest. Also there was a secret mission at the end, from then on I always tried to find out if there was a secret mission in a game by watching the credits or entering a code.

2 Super Mario Bros. NES 1985

Wow I used to play this game for hours, there was a level that you could bounce an upside down turtle and keep doing it till you got to 99 lives. That is how I first beat the game. Everyone played this game including my mom. I have followed many of Mario and Luigi's adventures. Of course the pipes were the easy way sometimes, if you  had trouble with a section then you could slide down one of the pipes and sneak past an area, there were also secret worlds down there in a lot of Marios games.

This video shows the quick way to beat it, I did it this way after learning the hard way also.

3 Tetris PC 1984

Tetris has changed many times and adapted but this remains one of the greats and is still played today. I did not play the pc version, I think I payed it on nintendo.

4 Grand Theft auto III PS2 2001

I would agree that this belongs in the top 10, when it came out I had a yardsale and sold my games, playstation and gamecube to get the money to buy the ps2 just so I could play this game. This is what a snadbox game should be just like the GI says I completed the missions but the best part was gathering weapons and then blowing the crap out of everyone so that I could get my wanted level up. Anyone else? If you played it I am sure you have done that. This game set the bar for what graphics and gameplay should be, it put control of the game in the gamers hands.

Here is a short about GTA 3

5 Half Life 2 PC 2004

I am sorry to say that I didn't play this game but it is a great game. Here is what GI had to say about it "...moody and intense levels like City 17 and Ravenholm, Valve crafted an oppressive Orwellian world the likes of which had never been realized in a video game before- and has yet to be duplicated."

6 Doom PC 1993

Nobody can deny that Doom belongs on this list, we might not be playing MW2 if it weren't for the ceativity and inspiration of developers likeJohn Romero and John Carmack. FPS was on and wouldn't go away.

Here is a short video with some gameplay.

7 Metroid NES 1986

Metroid introduced us to a much larger world than most games at the time, the video shown is a speed run but it took most people hours(days) to figure out where to go and find all of the upgrades.

Part one of a three part vid.

Part 2

Part 3

8 Final Fantasy III SNES 1994

Final Fantasy is a great series but it wouldn't be a series if it didn't have a game like this to build on so we  thank Square for having vision and developing a great game. I hate turn based games but Final Fantasy is great regardless.

9 Super Mario Bros 3 NES 1990

what a step up from super mario, in this game you could fly with the cape and explore the clouds, replay value was good because you could play through it a couple of times while exploring above the clouds and in the pipes.

10 Ms Pacman arcade 1981

Pacman was great but Ms Pacman was a hit in every restaurant I went in, they had little arcade consoles for two players. I would always have to sit there and play while we waited for our food. Ms Pacman was more popular, i guess is was because of the little things she did in between levels, should we call them cutscenes.

11 World of Warcraft

WOW has a huge fan base and takes leveling up and collecting to a new level.

Here is a quote from one of the users so you can see the dedication and emotion of its players "As much as I'm looking forward to the content, I will surely miss many of the old zones, and it saddens me that many of the places that I leveled up in many years ago will be changed forever. Before the expansion drops, I will be taking more than a few nostalgic trips through places like Dark Shore and the Barrens. I hope Mankirk's wife finally gets a proper burial before the Barrens gets sundered."

12 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past SNES 1992

While I agree this is a great game I don't think it should have made the list, simply improving on a first in a series should not be enough to make the list.

13 Super Mario 64 N64 1996

Super Mario and 3D great, Graphics are great but still no voice so we still have to read through much of the dialogue. His signature moves are still in the game but its now 3 D, N64 was a great system and this was a great game.

Here is a video about it:

14 Call of Duty Modern Warfare PS3, Xbox 360, PC 2007

Gaming has changed forever, fast paced and explosive, its multiplayer has changed what we expect from a game. You are no longer stuck with a certain weapon loadout, you can customize it to suit your gaming style. The campaign intrduced new aspects to gaming and wasn't limited to just your character, vehicles such as the AC 130 brought on a new level of excitement but the problem is, no game can go back now it can only go forward or us hardcore gamers will not accept it.

15 Final Fantasy VII PSone 1997

This was my first final fantasy, the cutscenes were so great my whole family would watch me play just so they could follow the story. That is the best thing about the game it told a story and it was well done.

Here is a trailer for the game:

16 Mike Tysons Punch Out NES 1987

I don't think this should have made the list but I would like to see a modded version where you can bite Mikes ear off LOL, payback is a b%#$

17 Chrono Trigger SNES 1995

Muliple endings thats a great idea, replay value increases if there can is some variation in the game but gameplay was predictable besides that.

18 Resident Evil 4  Gamecube 2005

They tried to reinvent the series and did a good job mixing it up even though the campaign isn't as scary as some of the previous ones. Here is a review from Gamespot:

20 The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time N64 1998

This is one of my favorite titles. Ocarina of time was the first time I rode a horse in a game, played a musical instrument and grew up. I loved how The world was a puzzle and i had to figure it out. The first 3D Legend of Zelda was a hit, abilities collecting items and side missions were great and at times silly. Characters such as Dodongo,  Zora and Lord Jabu-Jabu will never be forgoten.

Here is a playlist for you if you need help rembering:

21 Super Metroid SNES 1994

Super Metroid had levels that you need to get to that were sometimes very hard to find, at the time I was playing it you couldn't just pull it up on you tube to find it. You had to figure it out or have a friend tell you. The game had iproved graphics and abilities along with some hard boss's to fight, Here is a speed run through of it, not the world record but about an hour, I couldn't do it that fast even after learning the locations of all the power ups.

22 Contra NES 1988

A 2-D shooter, if we only knew back then, There were some fanatics that played this game. Some of my friends would not get off it. It was a challange to make it through evey level. Younger gamers won't know much about lives, you needed all of your lives to make it through this game.
Here are some vids about Contra:

23 Galaga Arcade 1981

do we need to say why this is on the list? It is still around, check your local pizza place. 28 years later

24 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night NES 1988

I used to play this and it was a good game but I don't remember anything groundbreaking about it, while doing some research I did com across this Castlevania wiki: http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Castlevania_Wiki

25 Street Fighter II Arcade 1991

Like GI says there was a lot of action in the arcades at this time, you would have to challenge and beat someone to be able to play the game, there were many people in line for challenges. Ryu Pic on the right.
From Wiki, Premiering in the first Street Fighter, Ryu appears as the lead character from the game along with his best friend Ken participating in the Street Fighter tournament. Further games from the series show Ryu to be highly focused on his training, aiming to become the strongest he can. However, his powers also attract several criminals who want to use him for their plans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryu_(Street_Fighter)

26 God of War PS2 2005

Kratos kicks a$$, not much more needs to be said. My PS2 was not just barely made it through the game, I had to tap it gently to get it going again. Epic battle  and bosses, here is one:

Funny, does the little guy fighting the big guy remind you of Super Metroid?

27 Bioshock Xbox 360, PC 2007

This is one of my regrets, I still haven't played this game. I have reserved Bioshock 2, but anyways, Vision is the word of the day.  To many Bioshock is a game that has changed them , they are involved in the game not just playing it. It takes place in an alternate history and many say it has the best story of a game: watch this so you understand:

28 Diablo II PC 2000

Can anyone say epic cow battles:

29 Half Life PC 1998

Consoles had to improve to keep up with PC games like Half Life, so I would say that it probably fueled the fire for consoles to get where they are today.

here is a video that includes Half Life and three other titles from the list:

30 The ElderScrolls IV: Oblivion Xbox 360, PC

Explore is the word for this game, there was such a large world to explore and people to talk to. There were also different paths to take to get to the ending, it id one of the greats. Morrowind was first but Oblivion kicked it up a notch. There is not even enough space in this blog for me to tell you what you could do. Mix potions, enhance weapons, spells, stealing lockpicking etc.. A great game and i will leave you with a Vid:

GI put a lot of retro titles in the top spots and I don't think that enough thought was put into some of the latest advances for example Bad company with its destructable environment, anyways There are a lot of games that I Think should have made the list but didn't.
